How Airway-Focused Orthodontics Differs from Traditional "Straight Teeth" Treatment

Airway-Focused Orthodontics Explained | Woodland Park Orthodontist

Ask a traditional orthodontic practice what they’re solving for, and the answer is usually “straight teeth.” Ask an airway-focused practice the same question, and the answer starts further back: why did the jaw develop in a way that left the teeth crowded or misaligned in the first place, and what else is that same underlying pattern affecting?

Crowded teeth are usually a downstream symptom of underdeveloped jaws — arches that didn’t grow wide or far enough forward to comfortably hold all the teeth, or to leave adequate room behind the tongue for a healthy airway. The traditional fix, extracting teeth or retracting them to make room, treats the symptom but can shrink the arch (and the airway space) even further.

At our Woodland Park office, we approach it from the other direction: grow and develop the jaws toward their natural size first, then let the teeth align into that space. In practice, that looks like:

  • Palatal expansion for growing kids, or MARPE/MSE for adults whose growth has finished
  • Timing bigger interventions around natural growth spurts instead of working against them
  • Screening for tongue posture, tonsil size, and nasal breathing as a routine part of the orthodontic exam
  • Bringing in ENTs, myofunctional therapists, and sleep physicians when the airway is part of the story

Not every patient needs this level of workup — plenty of orthodontic cases really are straightforward alignment, and we treat them that way. But for kids and adults showing signs of mouth breathing, snoring, a narrow palate, or a recessed jaw, treating the teeth alone without addressing the airway leaves the actual cause untouched.

Dr. Zitterkopf evaluates every new patient at our Woodland Park practice through this wider lens. If you’re curious whether your case — or your child’s — has an airway component worth addressing, schedule a consultation and we’ll walk you through exactly what we see.
