Tongue-Ties and Airway Problems: What Parents Need to Know Before Age 5

Tongue-Tie & Airway Development Before Age 5 | Woodland Park

Most parents first hear the term “tongue-tie” during infant feeding struggles — but a tongue restricted by a short or tight band of tissue (ankyloglossia) doesn’t stop mattering once feeding is sorted out. Left unaddressed, it can continue shaping palate, bite, and airway development for years afterward.

Here’s why: the tongue is meant to rest against the roof of the mouth throughout the day, and that steady pressure is one of the main forces widening the palate as a child grows. A tied tongue often can’t reach the palate comfortably, so it settles low in the mouth instead. Over time, the palate narrows and rises into a higher arch than it should, permanent teeth end up with less room, and the nasal airway sitting directly above the palate ends up smaller too.

Watch for these signs:

  • Feeding difficulties as an infant, whether breast or bottle
  • Picky eating or gagging on certain textures as a toddler
  • A palate that looks unusually narrow or high-arched
  • Mouth breathing or snoring
  • Trouble with sounds like “l,” “r,” “t,” “d,” “s,” and “z”
  • Tongue pushing forward during swallowing

Not every tongue-tie needs a release, and this isn’t a decision to make based on appearance alone — function is what matters. At our Woodland Park office, Dr. Paulsen and Dr. Beck evaluate tongue mobility as part of routine pediatric dental exams, and when a frenectomy (release) is the right call, we pair it with myofunctional therapy afterward. Releasing the tissue alone rarely retrains years of habit — therapy is what teaches the tongue its new range of motion.

The window before age 5 matters because the palate is most responsive to these forces during that stretch. If your child has ongoing feeding issues, speech delays, or signs of restricted tongue movement, don’t wait for it to surface at a school screening. Schedule an evaluation with our Woodland Park team.
